Want to cook? Nothing nicer than cooking in the open air

Are you still looking for a gift for Saint Nicholas or Christmas? And preferably a gift that the whole family can enjoy, for example during the next camping holiday in Drenthe? Then a skottelbraai or cobb might be something for you. Both outdoor cooking appliances are a versatile and above all safe alternative to the barbecue.

Perhaps the skottelbraai or cobb is already part of your camping equipment. That's not inconceivable, because we see them both popping up more and more often near the caravan or tent. The skottelbraai is particularly popular. Do you have no experience with one of these two versatile outdoor cooking devices? Then it is really worth considering buying one. You can prepare the most delicious dishes in no time at all and the whole family will have a lot of fun with it.

Camping in Drenthe, with the skottelbraai or cobb

Both the skottelbraai and the cobb originate from South Africa. They were born out of pure necessity. In order to cook while working in the fields, without electricity, they 'roasted' meat on the bent steel of old ploughshares. That was the inspiration for the modern metal 'bowl' of the modern skottelbraai, which you simply connect to the gas bottle.

You can use the skottelbraai to grill meat, fish or vegetables in combination with a rack or grill, but you can also use the scale itself for a quick wok dish. It always works, partly thanks to a very handy non-stick coating that is easy to clean. With the skottelbraai you imagine yourself at your family campsite in Drenthe on the South African steppes.

Safe cooking at your family campsite in Drenthe

South Africa has many areas, including the steppes, that are unprecedentedly dry and where fire hazards always lurk. This explains the principle behind the now popular cobb, also known as the multifunctional barbecue. With briquettes or a special stone, you make a small fire in a closed, well-insulated metal 'bowl'. A plate is placed on top, which is hot in a few minutes. Originally, corn cobs were used as fuel. Hence the name.

The cobb is very suitable for roasting or grilling meat or fish. But of course you can also prepare a casserole on it. The cobb is a great alternative to the barbecue because it does not require an open flame. It does not get hot on the outside, so you can even put it on the table without any risk. On many campsites, barbecuing in high summer is not recommended. With the Cobb, you can still cook to your heart's content in the open air.

Do you already have a skottelbraai or cobb? And are you still looking for a gift for Saint Nicholas or Christmas that the whole family can enjoy? Then consider one of the many books written on the theme of 'cooking at the campsite'. You will find the best recipes in them. Also for your skottelbraai or cobb.
